Conscientious objector Halil Karapaşaoğlu was arrested by police and will serve 20 days in prison for refusing to pay a fine of 2,000TL.
A military court in Nicosia fined Karapaşaoğlu on 3 January, giving him 10 days to pay, which he refused. Following which, the police picked him up from his home in Köşklüçiftlik.
Fellow conscientious objector Murat Kanatlı said in a press statement, that despite the intention for the amendment of military law to allow for conscientious objection to military service, Karapaşaoğlu was imprisoned due to “technical crimes”.
He said there are ongoing court cases against other conscientious objectors who also face imprisonment, if an amendment to the law amendment is not implemented.
The outcome of these cases brought to the European Court of Human Rights will be against Turkey and “Turkey will be found guilty of these three cases”, he added.
