The UNSC discussed the report of UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres about progress made in resuming “meaningful and result-oriented negotiations” in Cyprus.

Security Council Ambassador Dian Triansyah Djani, Permanent Delegate of the UN to Indonesia, made a statement to the journalists after the meeting.

Djani said the UNSG’s Guterres’ Cyprus report and his temporary special adviser, Jane Holl Lute, welcomed the decision to continue consultations with the parties on the Island.

He said the UNSC stressed an urgent compromise for the security and economic interests of both sides in Cyprus.

Djani said the UNSC had called on both leaders in Cyprus to give positive messages to the public, to avoid actions that would harm the likelihood of success, to take more confidence-building measures and to implement them.

Guterres, in his report to the council last month, had said that he hoped his temporary special adviser Jane Holl Lute’s consultations with the parties would lead to the resumption of negotiations.
