Varosha Must Open Under UN Administration

North Cyprus News - PM Tufan - ErhurmanThe government should have a care how it treats the fenced-off town of Varosha/Maraş and its former inhabitants, prime minister of the last four-party coalition government Tufan Erhurman, has said.

He warned that the Turkish Cypriots may suffer if the town is re-opened in a manner that contradicts the UN Security Council’s resolution on the issue.

Erhurman said that firstly, “attempts to settle any part of Varosha by people other than its former inhabitants was inadmissible” and secondly, “Varosha should be opened under the administration of the United Nations”.

After criticising the current coalition government for ignoring the UNSC resolutions on the opening of the fenced-off town, Erhurman said that currently, those who had applied to the IPC [Immovable Property Commission) and had not received an effective remedy, have opened cases at the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) and they are also trying to open a debate about whether the IPC can be accepted as an effective domestic remedy.
