The European Commission has registered hellim/halloumi as a protected product that can only be produced in Cyprus, in order to prevent the sale of imitations.
The Commission also approved the regulation which permits the export of hellim under the Green Line Regulation. The arrangement was decided at today’s meeting.
It was ruled that an international body would check production of hellim in North Cyprus to ensure hygiene standards and quality.
