The “Blue Cyprus: Clean Waters and Kite Surfing” event was organised to draw attention to the importance of protecting sea waters and the living species they host, Yeniduzen reported.
The urgent need to prevent sea pollution was highlighted at the event organised by the EU Information Centre in Yedidalga.
According to the information provided by the EU Information Centre, the event started with the opening speeches of Lefke Mayor Aziz Kaya and Programme Manager Deniz Birinci from the European Commission Programme Support Office. The first part of the event included panels and roundtable discussions with the participation of representatives from MASDER (Mağusa Walled City Association), SPOT Cyprus, Cyprus Wildlife Research Institute and other civil society organisations.
Discussions were held regarding the current status of marine pollution in Cyprus, its effects on marine fauna and flora, and its consequences on the economy and quality of life. These resulted in recommendations on strategies to foster continued collaboration among stakeholders and follow-up activities that can be initiated together.
The second part of the event featured a kitesurfing demonstration and a short training session outdoors, underlining the importance of clean waters for recreational and economic purposes. The statement also provided the following information about the event:
“The event, which was held in line with the European Union’s strategic objectives under the European Green Deal, focusing particularly on biodiversity and zero pollution targets, also aimed to contribute to achieving the 2030 climate targets by reflecting the European Commission’s commitment to improving and protecting ocean and water health.
The event, which emphasised the restoration of marine and freshwater ecosystems, underlined the EU’s commitment to sustainable blue growth, which offers significant economic opportunities and social benefits”.
