The “Northern Cyprus Environmental Platform” held an environmental protest this morning at Long Beach in Iskele under the slogan “Protect Our Nature.” Many citizens and non-governmental organisations participated in the protest, where they clapped to draw attention to local environmental issues.
During the protest, participants displayed banners with messages like “Either Nature Will Be Protected, or Life Will End,” “If We Protect Nature, Nature Will Protect Us,” and “Respect for the Environment is Respect for Humanity,” highlighting the importance of environmental awareness. Members of the Republican Turkish Party (CTP), including MPs Fide Kürşat, Sami Özuslu, and Ürün Solyalı, also attended the event to show their support.
Speaking on behalf of the Environmental Platform, Feriha Tel, the President of the Green Peace Movement, criticised the current state of environmental issues, saying, “It’s unfortunate that we’re standing in the shadow of ongoing grand construction projects. Despite these developments, we’ll be sending our children to container classrooms when schools open next week. The municipality held a sea festival, but the same municipality isn’t doing anything to provide access to clean sea water”. Tel’s comments also brought attention to problems in education and infrastructure, in addition to environmental concerns. The protest ended with a focus on nature and the environment.
