The Republican Turkish Party (CTP) Group Vice Presidents, Erkut Şahali and Sıla Usar İncirli, spoke to the press following a conference held by the government coalition in the Blue Hall, Yeniduzen reported. During this press conference, Şahali addressed comments made by members of the National Unity Party (UBP), Ziya Öztürkler and Sunat Atun, regarding the opening of a parliamentary session by Fazilet Özdenefe. He referred to this action as an “occupation“.
Şahali stated, “From day one, we have been doing what we said. We are taking ownership of the parliament. We want to clarify that there has been a technical obstruction to the start of a legal session. Our party leader Tufan Erhürman has made this clear. Only Özdenefe, who was legally elected, has the authority to open the parliament. Besides that, it was claimed that Öztürkler was appointed through an organised handover ceremony by Zorlu Bey [Zorlu Töre former Speaker who was unable to be re-elected]. Today, we conducted a normal session by opening it with the legally designated president and vice president. There is no other meaning to this“.
He mentioned that Özdenefe needed to complete the ten-minute break she called due to the lack of quorum and highlighted that parliamentary staff left the assembly in a manner contrary to law. Şahali remarked, “Despite Özdenefe being in office, the parliament is not in a position to carry out any business“. He also stressed that a legal violation, which should not be accepted, occurred due to the actions of the government and its partners, stating, “Just because Öztürkler was declared president does not give it legal standing. This violation of the law, which no one should accept, reflects the stubbornness and indifference of the government and its partners. They are presenting a completed process by announcing a president who has not been elected. We are making efforts for its completion. We are here, and we will continue to be here. If this threshold is crossed, the sanctity and meaning of elections will change. As believers in democracy, who recognise it as a virtue and view the law as essential, we will continue to take ownership of the parliament and remain committed to our duties“.
