Director of the Meteorology Department, Sinan Güneş, reported that wind speeds exceeded 118 km/h yesterday in Serdarlı, Mallıdağ, and Kaleburnu. Speaking to the Turkish Agency Cyprus (TAK) about the strong winds affecting many regions, Güneş said, “The storm-like winds will gradually subside. The weather will return to normal this afternoon.”
Providing information based on data from the Meteorology Department’s measurement centres, Güneş stated that “very severe storms” (103–117 km/h) were recorded at the “Esentepe Deniz,” “Kalkanlı,” “Alsancak,” and “Mağusa Deniz” stations. In other areas, wind speeds ranged between 50 and 100 km/h.
Storm cause by sudden temperature and pressure changes
Güneş explained that the strong winds were caused by sudden changes in temperature and pressure. Reiterating that wind speeds exceeded 118 km/h yesterday in Serdarlı, Mallıdağ, and Kaleburnu, he noted that this equated to the highest level on the Beaufort scale in the country, classified as a “hurricane.”
He added, “Hurricane-level readings are rare in our records. We don’t often encounter winds of this intensity in the country.”
Today will also be cold
Commenting on temperatures, Güneş reminded that the temperature was 6–7 degrees below seasonal averages and said today would also be cold, similar to yesterday.
Weather will warm slightly from tomorrow
Güneş stated that temperatures would begin to rise slightly from tomorrow, reaching seasonal norms (20–23°C) in the coming days. He also mentioned that no rain is expected over the next 3–4 days.
