A couple from Alsancak has been given life sentences for the murder of their landlord Memduh Ulugün in March, 2018.
Special operations police were deployed to Kyrenia District Court for security. Mustafa Chağatay Street was closed to traffic on the morning of the sentencing.
Meryem and Mehmet Doğu both were given the maximum sentence of 40 years imprisonment, a minimum 33 years must be served for the wilful manslaughter of their landlord.
Memduh Ulugun was killed in broad daylight after receiving multiple stab wounds from Meryem Doğu.
Judge Nüvit Gazi Hacı said that there had been contradictions in Meryem Doğus’ claim that her landlord had raped her. He emphasised that her husband Mehmet Doğuş, had also played a major role in the murder and that it would not be possible to distinguish between the two defendants in the sentencing decision. Together, the couple had plotted to kill the landlord, he said. The judge said that both accused should be given punishment proportionate to the crime. Society should be defended from those who commit such an outrageous crime, he said.
