An employee at a business located on Mustafa Ruso Street in Nicosia, found himself under arrest on suspicion of misappropriating funds belonging to his workplace, Kibris Postasi reports. On Wednesday, he appeared at court facing charges of “employee theft” and “burglary“.

Police Officer Murat Taş, giving evidence in court, stated that the accused, Uğur Erkut, who works at a shop on Mustafa Ruso Street in Nicosia, allegedly pocketed 30,000 TL in cash from the deli section’s cash register on April 3, 2024, at approximately 11pm. The authorities noted that a complaint was promptly made against Erkut on the same day, leading to his arrest.

Further details revealed that on April 17, Erkut voluntarily visited the Nicosia Criminal Branch, saying that he was willing to provide a full statement.

The authorities emphasised that no restitution has been made to the affected business, and the investigation remains ongoing. They also clarified that Erkut’s work permit remains valid, emphasising his legal status, and requested a suitable bail arrangement.

After considering the evidence presented, Judge Zehra Yalkut Bilgeç ruled that Erkut be tried without detention, on the condition that he posts a bail amount of 50,000 TL in cash, secures two guarantors to sign bail bonds worth 500,000 TL each, abides by a travel ban, and reports to the authorities weekly.
