CTP (Republican Turkish Party) leader Tufan Erhürman, in an interview on Kibris Postasi Web TV, addressed pressing issues facing North Cyprus. He expressed deep concern about the country’s current trajectory, stating that this period is not one for surprises and that a situation has been created where “anything is possible“. He highlighted that while economic and democratic damage can potentially be repaired with the right policies, the harm done to the environment and political culture will be much harder to reverse. Erhürman believes that this ongoing damage is causing long-term harm to the country and is his greatest concern.

One of his key points was the economic shift towards the southern part of the island, with many people crossing the border for services such as dining, which is leading to a loss of tax revenue for the government. He warned that the financial situation could worsen significantly in the coming months, especially by October or November, if no action is taken. Despite these challenges, he criticised government officials for appearing unconcerned, continuing to act as if nothing is wrong while the public becomes increasingly impoverished. He called on society to recognise this existential threat and to take a stand against the current mindset, arguing that the country faces a critical decision: either show resistance or accept further decline.

Erhürman also pointed to growing problems in education and healthcare, mentioning overcrowded classrooms and hospitals unable to meet the needs of the population. He stressed that the government’s failure to properly plan and manage population growth is leading to a collapse in public services. For example, students are being educated in container classrooms, and hospitals are struggling to provide adequate care due to a lack of resources and staff.

Regarding the Cyprus issue, Erhürman stated that recent developments, such as the appointment of a new UN special envoy, Maria Angela Holguin, shows potential progress. However, he emphasised the importance of resolving the question of political equality between the two sides and the need for Cyprus to remain engaged with the international community, as isolation is not a viable option for the future.
