Fuel Price Hikes Driving Up Demand For Logs

North Cyprus News - Logs in TruckThe Forester’s Association are concerned about dwindling tree numbers caused by the increased demand for logs to the home.

The numerous price hikes of bottled gas and electricity are driving people to used logs to heat their homes. Trees are being cut down illegally, and there are not enough forestry workers to prevent this. Worst hit are forests between Alevkaya and Esentepe and Famagusta district.

The association has asked that logs be purchased from licensed traders only. They also want the state to impose strict controls on those who sell logs to the public.

It takes years to grow trees, the Foresters’ Association reminded, adding they cannot fight this problem alone. They called on the government to reduce fuel prices as this will ease the demand for logs for domestic use.
