Illegal Immigrant Arrested for Causing Fire in Nicosia

Noman Abid

Noman Abid, a Pakistani national who caused a fire in Nicosia, was arrested and brought to court yesterday, Kibris Postasi reports.

An officer at the Nicosia Judicial Branch presented the facts in court.

The police reported that on July 3, 2024, at around 9.15am, a fire broke out in the garden of the basement of an apartment building on Durmuş Bıyıklı Street in Hamitköy.

Following an investigation, the police determined that the fire was caused by the suspect throwing an unextinguished cigarette butt on a pile of cardboard.

The police stated that as a result of the fire, which was extinguished by fire crews, a wooden pergola in the apartment’s back garden, a water tank and its motor, as well as various pieces of furniture and household appliances, were damaged by the flames.

Additionally, the police indicated that the left rear bumper and fender of a car which was parked next to the pergola, melted due to the heat.

The police also reported that the heat caused the door and window glass of a residence on the back street of the apartment to crack, damaged the external unit of an air conditioner, and burned three citrus trees in the garden of the residence.

The estimated damage from the fire is approximately 350,000 TL, according to the police.

During an immigration check, the police found that the suspect had been staying in the country illegally since January 31, 2024.

The police requested that the suspect be sent to prison, noting that the investigation was complete and that the suspect did not have legal status in the country.

Judge Jale Ergüden, after evaluating the testimony, ordered that the suspect be detained for a period not exceeding 45 days.
