President Mustafa Akıncı has made a new proposal to the Greek Cypriot leader Nicos Anastasiades on the issue of hydrocarbon exploration offshore Cyprus.
Akıncı has proposed the establishment of a joint committee on the hydrocarbon issue through the UN Special Representative Office in Cyprus.
This is with the aim of giving Anastasiades the chance to pre-examine and to later evaluate the proposal. He made this suggestion on Friday, at a tête-à-tête meeting with the Coordinator of the UN Good Offices Mission Sergiy Illarionov.
President Akıncı’s new proposal is aimed at reducing tension and conflict over the hydrocarbons issue through cooperation.
The proposal involves the establishment of a joint committee which will be under the supervision of the UN and which will be formed with the participation of the same number of members from both sides.
The proposal which set forward the structure, targets and methodology of the committee also includes the establishment of a fund and details on how this fund will be used.
Akıncı has also sent the proposal to the UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres, the President of the EU Commission Jean Claude Junker and the High Representative of the EU for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Federica Mogherini.
