A young man who was arrested in connection with charges of “Grievous Bodily Harm and Serious Assault” in Nicosia, has appeared in court.
At the court hearing, police officer Doğukan Can presented the findings related to the incident. Can testified that the suspect, Ahmet Can Varan, assaulted M.S., a 52-year-old unemployed resident of Nicosia, at around 8 pm on 1 November 2024 on Mecidiye Street in the Surlariçi area of Nicosia. Allegedly due to gossip spread about him, the suspect punched M.S. in the face three times, causing him to fall and hit his head on the concrete ground. This resulted in a skull fracture, causing grievous bodily harm.
The officer informed the court that M.S. is under observation in the Neurosurgery Department at Nicosia State Hospital due to a brain haemorrhage and skull fracture and is in a critical condition.
Officer Doğukan Can stated that the suspect Ahmet Can Varan was detained under a warrant and voluntarily provided a statement when questioned about the matter. However, further investigation is needed to verify his statement, and local CCTV footage must be reviewed. For the initial stage of the investigation, the officer requested that the suspect be held in police custody for three days.
Senior Judge Çiğdem Güzeler, after hearing the testimony, ordered the suspect to remain in police custody for three days while the investigation continues.
