A contract was signed between the tourism ministry and the company awarded the tender for the renovation of the wooden boardwalk in Kyrenia old harbour, under the auspices of the Deputy Prime Ministry, Ministry of Tourism, Culture, Youth, and Environment, Kibris Postasi reported. The signing ceremony, held at the ministry, was attended by the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Tourism, Culture, Youth, and Environment, Fikri Ataoğlu, alongside Aşan Transportation Director Hüseyin Aşan, who both signed the agreement.
In his statement, Ataoğlu announced that another step had been taken towards improving the Kyrenia old harbour, a site of great importance to tourism. He highlighted the significance of the project, explaining that renewing the wooden boardwalk in the ancient harbour would enhance the area’s appeal to tourists while preserving the port’s historical character.
Ataoğlu indicated that the project would commence at the end of November and conclude by the end of April, with the renovation of the wooden boardwalk expected to be completed within five months.
He noted that the wooden boardwalk, frequented by yachts and tourists in Kyrenia Ancient Harbour, had deteriorated over time. The new boardwalk will be constructed in a more resilient, contemporary, and modern design, with a reinforced steel frame structure beneath and a wooden surface above.
Ataoğlu added that the new boardwalk will be larger than the previous one, and plans include relocating the booths for yacht tour sales onto this wooden surface, allowing for a more spacious and comfortable use of the harbour area.
He stressed that the project would prioritise environmental sustainability while also preserving cultural heritage, ensuring that the boardwalk meets modern needs and is suitable for both tourists and locals.
Finally, Ataoğlu emphasised the ongoing efforts to beautify Kyrenia old harbour, noting that both local tradespeople and sectors benefiting from tourism will see the advantages of these improvements. He added that they would continue working in consultation with all stakeholders.
