In a bid to improve road safety, police patrols have intensified their scrutiny of speeding vehicles, with alarming figures reported for violations in recent years, BRTK reports.
During traffic checks conducted by law enforcement in 2023, a staggering 31,835 drivers were cited for exceeding speed limits, a number that surged to 17,151 within the same period in 2024 (spanning from January 1 to May 5).
Tragically, the repercussions of speeding have been starkly evident, with 15 fatal accidents attributed to speeding in 2023 and a further 10 in 2024.
The General Directorate of Police underscored the prevalence of traffic infringements uncovered during routine patrols nationwide, emphasising the need for stringent enforcement measures.
A recent statement from the General Directorate of Police highlighted proactive efforts to curb traffic violations, including crackdowns on offences such as running red lights and using mobile phones while driving. Results from these operations were disseminated to the public, underscoring the gravity of non-compliance with road regulations.
Subsequent to the enforcement period between April 15 and 28, where focus was placed on traffic light and mobile phone violations, attention shifted to drivers flouting speed limits between April 29 and May 5. During this period, a total of 1,677 drivers were apprehended and reported for excessive speeding nationwide.
The statement reiterated alarming statistics, with 31,835 speeding violations recorded in 2023 and 17,151 in 2024 (between January 1 and May 5). Furthermore, speeding was identified as a significant contributing factor in 1,004 accidents in 2023, resulting in 15 fatalities, and 538 accidents in 2024, with 10 fatalities attributed to speeding.
Law enforcement officials affirmed their commitment to sustained vigilance on all aspects of road safety, urging drivers to adhere to traffic regulations and collaborate in the collective effort to prevent accidents.
