Two pilots died after their training plane crashed near Geçitkale Airport.
The plane, which belonged to the Air Sports Federation, crashed at around 12.50 hours today.
Trainer pilots Serkan Özcezarlı (46) and Hakan Çetinkaya (46) died at the scene.
Transport Minister Tolga Atakan, who along with Prime Minister Ersin Tatar, visited the scene of the accident, pointed out that both men were highly experienced pilots.
The reason for the accident is yet to be determined. Police say that an air accident investigation team will arrive from Turkey tomorrow.
Upon hearing of the accident, teams as well as the relatives of the pilots flocked to the area.
Air Sports Federation President Zeki Ziya, who conveyed his condolences to the pilots’ families, said that the aircraft was an ultralight type, Italian-made ICP Ventura. The two-seater plane could be used for any purpose and because it was light, it was generally used by amateur pilots, he said.
