The UN Security Council, which held an informal closed session on the agenda of Maraş/Varosha at the request of South Cyprus, confirmed its current decisions on Maraş.
The Security Council reiterated that Maras could only be opened for the settlement of its legal owners, and also pointed out that this was part of a federal solution to the Cyprus problem.
The Council reaffirmed the UN’s 550th and 789th resolutions on the fenced-off town. A statement made after the meeting, said that no action should be taken on Maraş unless in accordance with the 550 and 789 proposals.
The 550th resolution of 11 May 1984 stresses that any settlement in the region is unacceptable except for the former inhabitants of Maras. The 789 resolution is based on UN resolutions, within the framework of political equality and a bi-zonal, bi-communal and single international identity; points to a federal solution.
UN Security Council President Jerry Matthews Matjila also addressed the two Cypriot leaders and asked them to focus on confidence-building measures. Andreas Mavroyannis, Permanent Representative of the Republic of Cyprus to the UN, announced that the South Cyprus government was satisfied with the decision.
The Evkaf maintains that Maraş belongs to the Abdullah Pasha Foundation and is fighting for its rights in the international court.
