According to reports from the Athens News Agency, it has been revealed that Maria Angela Holguin, the personal envoy of UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, has had her term of office extended by an additional three months, which was originally set to conclude at the start of July, Kibris Postasi reports.

Yesterday, during a meeting with UNSG Guterres at the United Nations Headquarters in New York, Holguin also held discussions with Greek Foreign Minister George Gerapetritis in Guterres’s presence.

Despite objections from Ersin Tatar regarding the extension of Holguin’s term, diplomatic sources relay that the Secretary-General expressed “full confidence” in Holguin. He views her as a seasoned diplomat who will exert utmost effort to achieve progress.

Meanwhile, expectations are that Holguin will submit her report to Guterres by the end of June.

Holguin was assigned by UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on January 5 for six months to investigate whether there is common ground between the two Cypriot communities for new and official Cyprus talks.

Holguin made three visits to Cyprus in January, March and May and made a number of individuals, representing political parties and NGOs on the island.

Additionally, it is anticipated that the Cyprus issue will be on the Security Council’s agenda in July, coinciding with Russia’s assumption of the presidency.
