A woman who attempted to strangle her 9-year-old son with a bathrobe belt, appeared at a Nicosia court again to request bail, Yeniduzen reports.
Giving evidence in court, a police officer said that the investigation into the incident that occurred on June 9. The officer said that the suspect N.Y. was arrested and had appeared in court three times and had received a total of 18 days in detention orders.
The police announced that during this period, she was examined at Barış Psychiatric Hospital and a report was obtained. According to the report, the suspect was found to be criminally liable both during the incident and currently. The police officer requested the suspect’s detention pending trial, as the crimes committed fall under the jurisdiction of the Heavy Criminal Court.
Prosecutor Hasan Boşnak questioned the police officer about the incident. The officer stated that the day before the incident, the suspect had been on vacation with her family at a hotel in Kyrenia, where she obtained the bathrobe belt. The crime was committed one hour after returning from vacation. The police described how the suspect pressed her knee into her son’s back while he was trying to resist the attack and continued the strangulation until the child fainted. Believing her son to be dead, the suspect stopped and told her husband in the courtyard, “I strangled and killed our son.” The police stated that when the suspect’s husband entered the house, he saw the child unconscious and bleeding from the mouth on the carpet and called an ambulance.
The police explained that the carpet and bathrobe belt from the scene were taken as evidence. The police officer reported that in her statement, the suspect claimed she committed the crime because of her deteriorating mental health. Prosecutor Hasan Boşnak also inquired about the child’s current condition. The police explained that the child is staying with his father and is receiving regular psychological support.
Prosecutor Boşnak emphasised that the crimes committed by the suspect are among the most serious in the penal code and that if convicted, the suspect would face a significant prison sentence, thus requesting her detention pending trial.
Defendant mentally ill and on medication
The defendant’s lawyer argued that his client had received treatment at Barış Psychiatric Hospital in 2018 and is still on medication, claiming the incident was a schizophrenic episode. Judge Zehra Yalkut Bilgeç stressed the seriousness of the alleged crimes. After evaluating all the facts, the judge ordered that the suspect be detained for trial, sending her to prison for a period not exceeding three months.
