The Attorney General’s office has stated that Zorlu Töre did not win the vote to become Speaker of Parliament, as he received 25 votes against him and only 23 in favour. In the vote, held on Thursday evening, Töre had declared, “I’ve won, I will seek the Attorney General’s opinion”, before closing the session.
According to information obtained by Yeniduzen, the Attorney General’s office gave a negative opinion on the matter, leaving the final decision up to Parliament.
Meanwhile, Deputy Speaker Fazilet Özdenefe shared the Attorney General’s view with the press, stating, “The Attorney General believes that Mr. Zorlu Töre was not elected as Speaker of Parliament. I will soon file this opinion in Parliament’s records”. Özdenefe noted that the written opinion highlighted that more votes were cast against Töre than in his favour.
Although there has been no official statement yet, the UBP’s Central Executive Committee and Party Council, which met today, are expected to decide on a new course of action.
Zorlu Töre, who was incumbent Speaker of the Assembly took that office in 2022.
