Presidents Eroglu and Anastasiades are scheduled to meet at 11.30 am this morning to assess the course of the continuing Cyprus negotiations.
They will meet, accompanied by their aides at the home of the Deputy Special Representative of the UN Secretary General Lisa Buttenheim, in the UN protected area of Nicosia.
President Eroglu has agitated for the discussions to move on to the ‘give and take’ part of the talks, however, it would appear that there are too many differences to begin this process. Further, the two chief negotiators in the talks, Kudret Ozersay and Andreas Mavroyiannis have not yet completed their scrutiny of all topics to be discussed.
One of the divergences is the subject of the return of Varosha/Maras to the Greek Cypriots under UN control. The Greek Cypriots have consistently demanded the return of the ghost town as a confidence building measure while the Turkish Cypriot side has been adamant that this cannot be discussed fully until a conclusion is reached in the Cyprus negotiations.
