Famagusta Mayor Süleyman Uluçay reacting to racist comments made by a restaurant owner on Glapsides Beach, described the comments as “unfortunate”, Yeniduzen reports.

In a written statement, Uluçay said: “The private operator of Glapsides Beach, located within the boundaries of Famagusta Municipality, regrettably made an unfortunate decision by stating that it would not allow people from certain countries or anyone bringing food and drink on to the beach. I want to emphasise that we will never accept this approach, which directly violates human rights, and we will take the necessary legal action against the operator. The rules governing the operation of all beaches in our region, the maintenance of peace and security, and their legal framework are clear. No one should see themselves above the law. As Famagusta Municipality, we will do whatever is necessary to rectify this disgrace immediately”.

The social media post by Hasan Gocco, who works as a lifeguard at Glapsides Beach, has sparked significant backlash. In his post, Gocco outlined the beach rules according to his own views, using racist expressions. He stated his own rules, including “People of Pakistani nationality cannot enter the beach” and “Blacks are prohibited from entering“. These discriminatory and racist statements caused a wide reaction and backlash on social media.
