In Nicosia, a woman who was arrested on charges of attempting to kill her 9-year-old son, appeared in court again today as the police are seeking an extension to her detention, Kibris Postasi reports.
Police officer Emrah Turgal testified in court, presenting the findings of the investigation. Turgal stated that the defendant, N.Y., had planned the act due to a psychological breakdown. On June 9, 2024, around 3pm, at her home in Nicosia, she attempted to strangle her son with a 150 cm long bathrobe belt taken from a hotel in Kyrenia where she had stayed the previous day.
The police reported that the child was taken to Dr. Burhan Nalbantoğlu State Hospital Emergency Service by a 112 emergency ambulance and was discharged after receiving treatment and undergoing checks.
The police also reported to the court that during the examination of the crime scene, they seized a carpet with suspicious stains and the bathrobe belt used by the defendant to strangle her son as evidence.
The police officer mentioned that the defendant initially told her husband and a neighbour, “I killed our son, I strangled him to death,” and also told the arriving police team, “I had a psychological breakdown, I strangled my son“.
The police noted that the defendant was arrested on the same day and gave a voluntary statement. On June 10, 2024, she was brought to court and received a 3-day detention order. She was also taken to Barış Mental and Neurological Diseases Hospital to determine her criminal responsibility. The doctors indicated that she needed to stay in the hospital, where she remained for 3 days. The police explained that the doctors required 15 days to prepare a report on the defendant.
The police reported that the defendant was brought to court on June 13 and received an 8-day detention order, but during this period, the medical examinations were not completed. The investigation into her criminal responsibility is ongoing, and the necessary reports have not yet been obtained.
The police officer highlighted that additional statements need to be taken, and the report on the defendant’s criminal responsibility is awaited. He requested an additional 7 days.
Judge Zehra Yalkut Bilgeç, after evaluating the testimony, ordered that the defendant remain in police custody for an additional 7 days for further investigation.
