Arrested for illegally importing 640 Kg of meat

A man who was apprehended with 640 kilos of illegal meat in Akıncılar and subsequently arrested, was brought before the court. He claimed that he had found the meat by the roadside, Yeniduzen reports.

During the court proceedings, police sergeant Hüseyin Ergüleç provided details of the investigation.

Ergüleç testified that on June 18, 2024, teams from the Nicosia Police Department’s ÇÖŞ unit stopped a four-door pickup truck they believed to be suspicious on the Famagusta – Nicosia highway. Upon searching the vehicle, they discovered 640 kilos of various meats illegally imported from southern Cyprus.

The police reported that the suspect identified as O.Ş., was caught red-handed. When taken to the station and questioned, he claimed he had found the meat by the roadside in the Akıncılar area.

A subsequent search of the suspect’s home, conducted with a court order, revealed an additional 10 kilos of meat in his freezer. The suspect stated that he had found this meat at his door the previous day.

According to the police, veterinary department teams inspected the meats and found no seals, determining them to be unhealthy.

Sergeant Ergüleç mentioned that the suspect’s statements needed to be verified, and additional testimonies were required. He requested that the suspect be detained for two days to ensure the investigation could proceed without hindrance.

Judge Zehra Y. Bilgeç granted the request, ordering the suspect to be held in police custody for two days while the investigation continued.
