A think-tank has presented a letter to No. 10 Downing Street in London calling for an end to embargoes on North Cyprus and to reconsider options for a solution to the Cyprus problem.
The Besparmak Group, which is made up of former TRNC prime ministers, ministers, parliamentary speakers, senior judges, businessmen and peace workers, called for an end to “the anachronistic and counterproductive measures of isolation” imposed on the Turkish Cypriots initiated by the Greek Cypriot administration.
The letter was delivered by Kerem Hasan, foreign affairs coordinator for the group. It highlighted the importance of lifting the embargoes not only because of human rights but also to provide an incentive for the Greek Cypriots to adopt a more positive approach to a just and lasting solution to the Cyprus issue. The letter said that it was time to “think outside the box” and consider other alternatives for a Cyprus settlement including a “civilised divorce” .
