Former President Mustafa Akıncı’s memoir, “As It Happened Vol. II (1991-2000),” has been published. This second volume covers the pivotal events in Cypriot politics during the 1990s, following the first volume that detailed 1975-1990, Kibris Postasi reported.
Published by Söylem, the 345-page book delves into significant events such as the 1991 by-election, Naci Talat’s death, the formation of the DP from UBP defectors, Özal’s desire for a Cyprus solution, the 1993 early general election, the Parliament’s decision to annul the federation resolution, the ABAD decision, the major fire in Kyrenai, Akıncı’s first presidential candidacy, the St. Barnabas raid, the murder of Turkish Cypriot journalist Kutlu Adalı, deaths at border incidents, the now defunct national airline KTHY, the EU’s Luxembourg decision, “ministers and MPs with Greek passports”, the UBP-TKP coalition, the State Theatre fire, bank collapses, the crisis with GKK Commander Özeyranlı, the “espionage plot against journalist Şener Levent”, and the presidential election.
According to the back cover, this volume helps to understand Cyprus’s entry into the new millennium following the dissolution of the USSR. The 1990s were marked by global upheaval and local turmoil, with Akıncı providing insights from his time as a prominent opposition leader and his brief stint in government.
The “As It Happened” series by Akıncı will conclude with a third volume covering 2001-2009. The new book is now available in all bookstores.
