Çatalköy-Esentepe Mayor Ceyhun Kırok issued a statement regarding the ongoing issue of harmful emissions from the Teknecik Power Plant, stressing the urgent need for action, Yeniduzen reports.

The time to act has long passed“, Kırok stated. “We must prioritise public health and take immediate measures to investigate and mitigate this issue. Authorities must not ignore this any longer“.

Increasing Cancer Cases in Çatalköy Linked to Teknecik Power Plant

How many more lives must be lost before action is taken against the toxic emissions from the Teknecik Power Plant?

Last week in Çatalköy, six people were buried within five days, with 50% of these deaths attributed to cancer. Since the start of 2024, at least 14 residents have died from cancer within the Çatalköy Esentepe municipality.

What are we waiting for?

There is a clear pattern of cancer cases in specific areas. In one neighbourhood, 12 out of 15 homes have reported cancer cases, with multiple family members succumbing to different types of cancer.

Despite this alarming situation, no official investigations are being conducted to identify the causes.

Our Proposal:

We propose collaborating with the Ministry of Health and universities with medical faculties to create a cancer map of the region. We are ready to work with all supportive institutions.

Key Questions:

Is the Teknecik Power Plant’s toxic emission the primary cause of the increasing cancer cases in our region?

Why are the causes of cancer and other diseases in our region not being investigated?

How many countries in the world produce electricity this way, and what precautions do they take?

How long will this continue?

It is crucial to find a solution immediately. We urge authorities to act now to prevent further risk to public health.

We must implement realistic and effective solutions without delay.
